Dive into the Magical World of “The Little Mermaid 2023” – Meet Flounder! 🐠
Actor Jacob Tremblay, who played Flounder in the Disney live-action remake of The Little Mermaid, is speaking out after the character’s redesign caused quite a stir online.
When the movie’s character posters were revealed recently, several fans grumbled that the adorable cartoon fish’s redesign — which saw him grow smaller and less spherical — was a little too realistic-looking in comparison to his 1989 predecessor. However, while walking the red carpet at the film’s Hollywood premiere on Monday, Tremblay expressed his approval of Flounder’s new look.

“When I went in for the audition, I was shown the design, and I saw the movie last night, and I have to say that I think it really, really worked,” Tremblay told PEOPLE. “I believe they were geniuses who knew exactly what they were doing.”
He also mentioned that considering the film’s live-action environment, Flounder’s life like appearance made sense. “I believe it will work out perfectly.” “I think it goes with everything,” Tremblay added. “So, if it was different, I don’t think it would really work.”
Flounder isn’t Ariel’s (Halle Bailey) only sea creature to undergo a live-action metamorphosis. Sebastian the crab, voiced by Daveed Diggs, appears more like an actual crab than his animated predecessor, while Awkwafina’s brave seagull Scuttle was transformed into a diving bird.
In addition to the new CGI creatures, Alan Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda have written three new songs for The Little Mermaid: “For the First Time,” “Wild Uncharted Waters,” and “Scuttlebutt,” which Menken describes as “accidental art.”
