Olivia Rodrigo Debates Whether It Is a “Bad Idea Right” to See An Ex. Tate McRae, Iris Apatow, Madison Hu, in a Music Video

The new music video for Olivia Rodrigo’s most recent single, “Bad Idea Right?” was directed by Petra Collins, and it depicts how she will do everything to see an ex.

Dan Nigro, Rodrigo’s primary collaborator, produced the guitar-heavy song, which has snarky lyrics about wanting to see a former sweetheart but knowing it’s not the wisest course of action (and perhaps not caring). Rodrigo speak-sings the lyrics.

Rodrigo sings, “Haven’t heard from you in a couple of months/ But I’m out right now and I’m all fucked up/ And you’re callin’ my phone and you’re all alone/ And I’m sensing some undertone,” in the opening verse. The energised chorus chants, “Seeing you tonight — it’s a bad idea, right?” repeatedly.

The hazy film, which appears to have been taken straight out of the 1990s, begins at a house party where Madison Hu, Tate McRae, and Rodrigo are gathered in the lavatory with their real-life best pals. Random partygoers who are crowd-surfing and walking around the event concur to Rodrigo that it is a “bad idea, right.” However, she chooses to dismiss them all, telling herself, “Fuck it, it’s fine.” She then sets out on her adventure to said ex’s house, hitchhiking in the rain on the back of a truck and riding the bus while getting splashed by a slushie.

Rodrigo’s social media teasers gave fans a first look at the single’s music video and flirty cover art — a fuzzy photo of the popstar posing behind glass with the song’s pensive title emblazoned across it in red lipstick with kiss marks — on Thursday night.

The second single and music video from Rodrigo’s forthcoming sophomore album “Guts,” which is released on September 8 via Geffen Records, are both titled “Bad Idea Right?” Rodrigo became the youngest artist to release three No. 1 singles on the list with “Vampire,” which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, following “Drivers Licence” and “Good 4 U.”

Her 2021 debut, “Sour,” will be followed by “Guts,” a 12-song collection that, like “Sour,” will be produced by Dan Nigro. According to reports, Rodrigo’s upcoming album “Guts” will address the “growing pains” she has encountered since becoming a megastar thanks to her hit song “Drivers Licence.”

Rodrigo revealed what motivates her to be so open about her feelings in a cover story for Variety in August 2021.
“I absolutely opened up about my innermost secrets and fears on ‘Sour’, which is kind of odd to be like, ‘Here, you guys can take this. It can be listened to by anyone who wants to,’ Rodrigo remarked. But once it’s out there, it’s extremely empowering, and it’s been really amazing for me to watch others connect with that vulnerability.
